April 25th, we raise a glass to one of the most fragrant and alluring white grape varietals—Viognier! International Viognier Day, celebrated annually on the last Friday of April, pays homage to this lush, expressive grape known for its luxurious texture and enhancing aromatics.
Originally believed to be native to France, Viognier now thrives in regions like Italy, the United States, Chile, South Africa, and beyond. This varietal has truly made a comeback after almost going extinct in the 1980s. But thanks to passionate winemakers, it not only survived—it flourished.
Viognier can be made into various styles, from light and floral to rich and full-bodied. It also beautifully takes to oak aging, developing added depth with vanilla, spice, and caramel notes.
